Micro-Credential Highlight: Aromatherapy for Caregiver Burden and Professional Burnout

Written by American College of Healthcare Sciences | May 29, 2024 3:00:00 PM

In the intricate web of healthcare and wellness, there is a crucial yet often overlooked group of individuals: caregivers and high-risk professionals. Caregivers are often the unsung heroes behind the scenes, tirelessly providing care and support to those in need. However, this noble duty can take a toll, leading to high physical and emotional stress. Professional burnout, defined by the World Health Organization as “a syndrome conceptualized as resulting from chronic workplace stress that has not been successfully managed,” can take a similar toll on many individuals. Recognizing these timely issues, ACHS has launched a groundbreaking micro-credential aimed at addressing these challenges head-on: Aromatherapy for Caregiver Burden and Professional Burnout.

Caregiver and Professional Burnout Fundamentals

Launched in February of 2024, this micro-credential explores the intricate dynamics of both caregiver burden and professional burnout. Our expert faculty members guide students through key concepts and emerging research that redefine these phenomena, paving the way for innovative support strategies.

One of the fundamental aspects covered in this micro-course is understanding who caregivers are and their primary needs. Caregivers come from diverse backgrounds and play various roles, ranging from family members to healthcare professionals. By comprehensively examining their needs, participants gain invaluable insights into effectively tailoring support systems.

How Aromatherapy Can Support Burnout

This micro-credential investigates leading evidence-based research on strategies to mitigate burnout, emphasizing the importance of a holistic approach to systems change. Students also learn why individualization is key when developing support plans for caregivers and high-risk professionals.

The course explores primary ways aromatherapy can be a synergistic component of intervention plans for caregivers and professionals in their work and personal environments. Aromatherapy, with its therapeutic benefits, offers a holistic approach to alleviating stress and promoting well-being in both work and personal environments. Expert-designed formulas and essential oil palettes are provided, giving participants practical tools to embark on their aromatherapy journey.

To complement theoretical knowledge with hands-on experience, an optional practical lab kit from the Apothecary Shoppe is also available. This immersive learning opportunity allows participants to engage in experiential activities, reinforcing their understanding of aromatherapy and its applications in caregiving and professional settings.

ACHS Dean of Aromatherapy Introduces the Micro-Credential

On February 22nd, ACHS Dean of Aromatherapy Amanda Lattin hosted the webinar “Meeting Cancer Caregiver Needs: The Power of Aromatherapy Self-Care.” The webinar provides insight into aromatherapy's role in self-care and support and introduces the new Aromatherapy for Caregiver Burden and Professional Burnout micro-credential. It delves into the unique set of needs family caregivers require to support their minds, bodies, and emotions as they walk alongside their loved ones during cancer treatment.
