We are thrilled to share the latest achievement of Amanda Lattin, our esteemed Dean of Aromatherapy. Her groundbreaking case study on the efficacy of Pineapple Myrtle essential oil in treating Tinea versicolor has been published in the Spring 2024 issue of the International Journal of Professional Holistic Aromatherapy.

Amanda has over 15 years of experience as a practicing aromatherapist and herbalist. She is a professor and Dean of Aromatherapy at the American College of Healthcare Sciences. Amanda also runs her own consulting practice and collaborates with healthcare professionals to integrate aromatherapy and herbalism into patient care plans. She has an impressive academic background, having taught subjects such as chemistry, biochemistry, herbal medicine, and aromatherapy at various colleges and universities.

Case Study Overview

Amanda’s study focuses on a 54-year-old male who presented with a persistent rash on his upper to mid-back. Initially appearing in February 2022, the rash gradually spread, characterized by small circles of lighter pigmentation and slight scaling. Despite previous consultations with his primary care provider and gastroenterologist, no formal diagnosis was made. The patient, who regularly uses integrative health modalities, requested an aromatherapy protocol for his condition, which was identified as Tinea versicolor—a common superficial fungal skin infection caused by Malassezia yeast.

Aromatherapy Protocol

Amanda chose Pineapple Myrtle® (Leptospermum petersonii variety 'B' ct. α-pinene) essential oil due to its potent antifungal properties. It was selected for its key constituents, which have demonstrated significant antifungal activity in various studies. A 2% dilution of Pineapple Myrtle essential oil in Grapeseed oil was prepared, and the treatment protocol was as follows:

  • Apply the dilution to affected areas twice daily for one week.
  • Continue application once daily after showering for two more weeks.
  • Transition to every other day for the fourth week.
  • Apply once weekly for the next four weeks.

The treatment also incorporated acupuncture to enhance the therapeutic effects. The client received acupuncture sessions during his visits, combined with the topical application of the essential oil.

Client's Progress and Results

The client responded positively to the Pineapple Myrtle treatment. In the first week, the borders of the rash became less scaly, and the itching stopped. After one month, the rash's borders became less defined, and the skin appeared smoother with no new affected areas. After seven months of treatment, the area continued improving, with no recurrence and beginning resolution of hypopigmentation.

The client expressed high satisfaction with the aroma and effectiveness of the Pineapple Myrtle essential oil and reported no adverse effects.

Study Implications and Future Considerations

Amanda Lattin's innovative approach demonstrates the potential of Pineapple Myrtle essential oil in treating Tinea versicolor. Her study not only highlights the therapeutic benefits of this specific essential oil but also opens avenues for further research into its antifungal properties. Although the current protocol with Grapeseed oil proved successful, Amanda expressed an interest in using Aloe Vera as a carrier oil in future protocols to address the oil dependency of Malassezia yeast.

This case study underscores the value of integrating aromatherapy with conventional treatments and showcases Amanda Lattin's expertise and contributions to holistic healthcare. Read the full case study to learn more: Tinea versicolor and Pineapple Myrtle®
